Can I use a Sigenergy AC charger with solar?

If you’ve ever wondered whether your Sigenergy AC Charger can play nicely with your solar panels, the short answer is yes. In fact, it’s one of the smartest ways to squeeze more value from the energy you generate.

Can the Sigenergy AC Charger use surplus solar?

It can, but it depends on what you mean by ‘use solar’.

See, your AC charger doesn’t directly connect to your solar panels. Solar panels produce direct current (DC) electricity. Your home, including your EV charger, runs on alternating current (AC). The electricity passes through an inverter to change it from DC to AC. When your EV charger draws electricity, it uses your home’s AC supply.

What makes the Sigenergy AC EV Charger interesting is its control logic, which it uses to decide when and how to charge.

The Sigenergy AC Charger supports solar-surplus (or solar + battery) charging modes and adjusts charge current based on system metering and the mode you select. You’ll learn more about this in the charger’s documentation or by asking your trusted electrician.

Basically:

  • If your house doesn’t use all the power the solar panels produce, the charger can increase charging power to absorb any available surplus (depending on the selected mode and what your system prioritises).
  • If your house suddenly demands more electricity (you turn on the kettle or the electric heating, for example), the EV charger can reduce charging, pause or allow a controlled amount of grid import, depending on your chosen mode and settings.

EV charging requires a minimum current. If the available power drops below that level, charging won’t start or will pause. That’s why surplus-only charging can feel stop–start on cloudy days or during winter.

The main benefit here is that you take full advantage of your solar power. Daytime EV charging can be expensive if you charge from the grid. Using your solar power prevents waste and minimises the cost of charging your car.

What is dynamic load management for my Sigenergy EV Charger?

Dynamic load management is the safety/control layer designed to prevent your home’s circuit breaker from tripping (‘supply overload’ in technical terms). As part of this, your installer fits and configures something called a Power Sensor (a Sigenergy meter) at the supply point.

This Power Sensor allows your Sigenergy EV charger to stay within your home’s electrical panel’s limits. The charger adjusts the charging current based on the grid-connection power reported by the Power Sensor, so it doesn’t overload the household supply.

Don’t worry, though. Your electrician will handle all this and explain the entire process. You don’t have to worry about it yourself.

So, in short, you need a qualified electrician experienced with solar, batteries and EV chargers, and,  ideally, someone familiar with Sigenergy products. To make your setup genuinely solar-smart, you also need the Power Sensor and the right system configuration.

All this means you don’t trip your panel’s circuit breaker and everything works as intended.

Does it work with a battery system like SigenStor?

Sigenergy products work best when they’re part of a joined-up home energy system. That’s where the SigenStor solar battery comes in.

When you combine solar panels, a SigenStor battery and a Sigenergy AC EV Charger, this wider Sigenergy system manages how electricity flows around your home, with the AC charger responding to those controls.

In practice, this means the system is constantly balancing several things at once. It looks at how much solar your panels are producing, how much electricity your home is using, the current state of the battery, and whether the EV is requesting charge. It also takes into account any limits you’ve set, such as maintaining a reserve in the battery for backup or charging the car only when certain conditions are met.

Depending on how the system is configured, surplus solar can be directed to household loads first, stored in the battery, or used to charge the car. At other times, the battery may supply the house to reduce grid imports, or charge from the grid during cheaper periods if that’s enabled. EV charging can also be limited or prioritised as part of a SigenStor-managed system.

What about using it with other brands?

Two useful points here.

First, you can run the Sigenergy AC Charger as a standard EV charger, even if you don’t go ‘all Sigenergy’. It functions perfectly well as a normal AC EV charger, because it still connects to your electrical supply like any other AC unit.

Second, if you want third-party control or monitoring, ask your electrician. They’ll adjust the OCPP settings, which let them authorise third-party platform management. It should work with select third-party apps and brands.

Those points aside, how compatible your Sigenergy EV Charger is with other brands depends on how you plan to control your surplus solar. In some cases, the charger itself takes control. In others, you need a dedicated home energy management system (EMS), a computer that controls everything. Sometimes it’s the inverter that contains the control logic for all this.

So, it’s certainly possible to mix and match manufacturers and brands. But if your goal is a streamlined app or portal with a single logic layer, it’s usually simplest to go ‘all Sigenergy’.

So, what’s the best setup for a Derby home?
