Five common myths about solar explained

Solar panels have become a common sight on homes across the UK, including in Derby and the East Midlands, over the past few years.

Yet despite the increased uptake, there’s still some confusion around how solar panels work and whether they’re worth investing in.

This blog walks through five of the most common myths about solar and explains what’s really going on.

Myth 1: Solar panels generate more electricity when it’s hot and sunny

Solar panels love sunlight, but they don’t love heat.

Panels generate electricity when light hits their photovoltaic cells. The brighter the light, the greater the energy production. However, as panels get hotter, their efficiency starts to drop.

That means a cool, clear and bright day can often produce more electricity than a very hot summer afternoon.

In the UK climate, this is great news. We may not have Mediterranean temperatures, but we do get plenty of bright, clear days with moderate temperatures. Those are ideal conditions for solar generation.

Myth 2: Without subsidies, solar panels aren’t financially beneficial

There was a time when generous feed-in tariffs meant you could be paid for all the electricity you generated from your solar panels and receive additional payments for the excess electricity you exported to the grid.

While the incentives aren’t what they once were, the core financial logic still stands. Every unit of electricity you generate and use in your home is a unit you don’t have to buy. And every unit you don’t use can be sold back to the grid.

If you add battery storage, you can use even more of the energy you generate, especially in the evenings when demand (and, therefore, prices) are higher.

Myth 3: The more solar panels you have, the faster you’ll earn back your investment

This sounds logical. More panels mean more electricity. More electricity means bigger savings. Bigger savings mean a faster  payback. Right?

Not necessarily. Some of the costs involved in installing the panels, such as scaffolding, don’t significantly differ based on the number of panels you’re getting. So, in some cases, it can make financial sense to add more panels.

However, the number of solar panels is only one part of the equation. What really matters is how well the system is designed for your home. A properly designed solar system should take into account:

  • Your energy usage throughout the day
  • Your roof orientation and pitch
  • Shading from nearby buildings or trees
  • How much you’re paid for the electricity you export

So, if you install more panels than your home can realistically use, you may end up exporting large amounts of electricity to the grid. This is a very slow way to earn back the initial investment and could end up extending the overall payback time.

How solar panels are fitted to roofs

Myth 4: Solar panels don’t work when it’s cloudy

If solar panels worked in only direct sunshine, they wouldn’t be much use in the UK. Fortunately, that’s not how they work.

Solar panels can generate electricity from UV even without direct sunlight. Output will be lower than on a bright, clear day (see above), but generation doesn’t stop.

A well-designed system, potentially combined with battery storage, can help account for these seasonal and daily variations.

Myth 5: Solar panels are bad for the environment

Solar panels require raw materials, manufacturing, transport and installation.

That all has a carbon footprint, but so do all other methods of generating electricity.

Most modern solar panels offset the carbon used in their manufacture within a relatively short period of time, often just a few years. After that, they can continue to generate clean electricity for decades.

And most oof the materials in modern solar panels can be recovered and reused. The recycling infrastructure needed to process these materials also continues to improve as solar adoption increases.

So, when you look at the full lifecycle, solar panels generate far more clean energy over their lifetime than the energy used to produce them. While no energy technology is entirely impact-free, compared to fossil fuels, solar is a significantly lower-carbon option over the long term.
