Here at Electrical Innovations, we fit solar panels to roofs all the time. Standing in the middle of a flat roof is a very different experience from the typical pitched style. The view is very different. There are no tiles to work around, and of course, no angle to balance on.
As such, the beauty of flat roofs is that they’re a blank space full of potential. That’s why so many people ask us if they’ll be suitable for solar panels. The answer is yes, but there are a few different things to think about before you commit.
Why flat roofs work well for solar
Flat roofs appear on all sorts of buildings, from small garages and extensions to large commercial warehouses. That space offers potential for solar generation, so it makes sense to use it.
A flat roof gives you control over how your solar panels face the sun. Installers set the tilt and orientation to capture the most light, rather than relying on a fixed roof pitch. They can angle panels enough to improve output while keeping them out of sight from the ground. This flexibility can also allow more panels than a pitched roof of the same footprint. With careful layout, installers avoid shading and optimise spacing.
Flat roofs make access easier for cleaning, inspections and maintenance, which is quicker and safer than on pitched roofs. Both roof types need a sound structure, quality mounting and professional fitting, but the difference lies in preparation. Pitched roofs already offer some solar exposure and water run-off, while flat roofs require angled frames, although that extra step gives you complete control over panel direction and often a more discreet installation.
Challenges and how to handle them
Flat roofs need the right mounting system. Technicians usually use one of two standard types, as follows:
- Ballasted frames involve panels being fixed to a frame held in place by a ballast weight (usually concrete blocks). There’s no need to drill into the roof with these, so there’s less risk of leaks, but they add significant load that the structure must support.
- Penetrating mounts are when technicians fit panel mounts by drilling through the roof surface into the structure. These spread less weight but require careful waterproofing to stop water damage.
The right one for you depends on your flat roof and its waterproofing and weight-bearing capacity. Your installer will do some loading checks (a structural survey) to make sure your roof is strong enough. Combined, the panels, frames and ballast can add a significant amount of weight that your roof may not have been designed to handle. Installers should also work with or alongside a roofing specialist to keep the surface watertight after fitting the mounts.
On that note, water drainage is extremely important, no matter the mounting system. A flat roof should have a slight fall to stop water from pooling. Panel frames are normally tilted between 20° and 25° to allow rain to wash dirt away and to increase energy production. This pitch also improves airflow under the panels, which keeps them cooler and more efficient. However, it’s not as steep an angle as pitched roofs (partly to minimise wind resistance and improve aesthetics), which means the efficiency isn’t quite as high.
Rules and permissions for solar panels on flat roofs
In most cases, you don’t need planning permission to install solar panels on a flat roof, provided the panels don’t protrude more than 600mm above the roof surface and the building isn’t in a conservation area or subject to specific restrictions. Commercial properties may face different rules, so it’s worth checking with your local planning authority.
Building regulations still apply. In the UK, these include checking the structural integrity of the roof, wind loading, and electrical safety. Using an MCS-certified installer (like Electrical Innovations) ensures the system meets these standards.
