  2. Divide by the average annual output per kW of solar in your area, typically 850-1,000kWh/kW in the UK. This means how much electricity one kilowatt of installed solar panels typically generates over a whole year, based on your local sunlight conditions.
  3. This gives the system size in kW to cover your use.
  4. Divide this system size by your chosen panel wattage (in kW) to find the approximate number of panels. 

For example, based on 3,500 kWh/year and 900 kWh/kW average output, with 350-watt (0.35 kW) panels:

  • 3,500 ÷ 900 = 3.89 kW system size
  • With 350 W panels: 3.89 ÷ 0.35 = about 11 panels

Typical systems are:

  • One- to two-person homes: four to seven panels
  • Average families (three to four people): nine to 12 panels
  • Larger homes (five+ people, electric heating): 12 to 18 panels

Note that you don’t have to cover 100% of your electricity to save money. Smaller systems reduce grid use and bills, and some start small and add later.
