The good news is that MCS certification isn’t as complicated as it might sound at first. What is an MCS certificate?
An MCS certificate comes from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme, which started back in 2007. It’s a UK-based quality assurance programme that covers low-carbon energy technology products like solar panels, heat pumps and small wind turbines.
The scheme does two important jobs. First, it certifies that products meet strict quality standards. Second, it certifies that installation companies have the right skills and follow proper procedures. So when we talk about MCS certification for solar panels, we’re actually talking about the equipment being installed and the company doing the installation.
For solar panels specifically, MCS certification means the panels and inverters have been independently tested and proven to work safely and effectively. It also means the installer has demonstrated they can design and install solar systems properly, following all the relevant standards and regulations.
The certification has been the baseline for quality in the UK’s solar industry for over 15 years now. It gives homeowners confidence that their solar investment will perform as promised.
What does the MCS certificate cover?
The MCS certification process for solar panels works on two levels. Both are equally important for your installation.
On the product side, manufacturers submit their solar panels and inverters for rigorous testing. Independent laboratories check everything from electrical safety to weather resistance. They test how the products perform in different conditions, how long they’re likely to last and whether they meet UK and European standards. Only products that pass these tests get MCS approval. How to verify your installer’s MCS certification
Checking an installer’s MCS certification is straightforward, and you should always do it before signing any contracts.
The easiest method is to search the MCS website. It has a ‘Find a Contractor’ tool where you can search by company name or location. When searching, make sure the company name matches exactly. Some firms use similar names to legitimate certified installers.
When you’re speaking to an installer, ask to see their certification documents. Check the dates are current and that solar PV is listed.

The risks of choosing a non-MCS accredited installer
Going with a non-certified installer might save you a few hundred pounds upfront, but it often costs much more in the long run.
The immediate problem is that you won’t qualify for SEG payments. Energy suppliers won’t accept applications without an MCS certificate. So, while your panels might generate electricity, you can’t earn money from your excess generation. For a typical household, that’s hundreds of pounds lost each year.

Without it, they might refuse claims related to your solar panels or even invalidate your entire policy. When you come to sell your home, the lack of certification could put off potential buyers or reduce your property’s value.
Getting your MCS certificate

Within ten working days of commissioning your system, we register it with the MCS database. You’ll receive your official MCS certificate shortly after, usually within two to three weeks. This certificate includes essential details like your installation date, system size and unique reference number.
Along with your MCS certificate, you’ll receive several other important documents. These include your system’s estimated annual generation figures, warranty information for both products and workmanship, and electrical safety certificates. We’ll also provide you with a user manual explaining how to monitor and maintain your system.
Keep all these documents somewhere safe. You’ll need your MCS certificate to apply for SEG payments with your chosen energy supplier. Most suppliers have online application processes that take just a few minutes once you have your certificate. You’ll also need these documents if you sell your property or make an insurance claim.
